Is there any importance of Keyword Tag for Google?

There was a time when webmasters and SEO managers give great importance to keyword tag on a specific page. By selecting most relevant keywords for a page and putting those keywords in keyword tag, webmasters used to tell search engines that my webpage is targeting these specific keywords and have content that match with these keywords. This keyword tag was also a part of on site SEO and have to put in <head> </head> tag. Just like we use 'description' tag in this section.

<meta content='SEO, Search Engine Optimization, On-Site SEO, Off-site SEO, Learn SEO, ' name='Keywords'/>

Search engines also gave importance to this tag as it was a good technique to tell the search engines about the content that one has on his/her web page.  But then webmasters misused this tag and stuffed it heavily with keywords no matter if the webpage have content related to those keywords or not. So when search engines find some specific keywords in this tag and shows up the page in search results, readers disappointed by the result as they don't find the content which they were looking for. As time passes, search engine algorithms become more efficient. Many search engines noticed this thing and now they are not giving importance to keyword tag. Keyword stuffing in keyword tag is now considered as spamming. The keywords which you have to target must be used in <title> tag or heading tags. And you have to use the keyword in your content as well. But again keyword stuffing in title tag or in content is also considered as spam. So you don't have to use the keywords unnecessarily in your content.

Keywords which you have to target must be used carefully in title tag, heading tag or alt attribute of <img> tag. So no need to panic about keyword tag now. Just natural content is key to success.
